At Colegio Personalizado Renfort, we firmly believe in the power of formative experiences that prepare our seeds (students) to face the challenges of today’s world. One such experience is participating in Model United Nations (MUN), events designed to strengthen leadership, argumentation skills, and critical thinking. Students engage in debates, propose solutions to global issues, and develop essential life skills in these settings.
What is a Model United Nations?
A Model United Nations is a simulation of various United Nations bodies where students from different educational institutions represent delegates and ambassadors of countries. During the debates, they defend their country’s position on a specific topic, engaging with other delegates in discussions that require deep analysis, effective communication, and adherence to diplomatic protocols.
How do we prepare at Renfort?
Once we receive invitations, we begin selecting our seeds, focusing on their eloquence and public speaking abilities, essential competencies in our Escole® Pedagogy
For preparation, we leverage technology through the Classroom platform, where our seeds complete the necessary tasks for participation, such as preparing the portfolio of their assigned country and drafting their opening speeches. Additionally, we hold in-person meetings to review the functioning of a Model UN, the rules of parliamentary language, and, most importantly, to build confidence in their ability to express ideas clearly and structured.
In recent months, our seeds have participated in various Model UN events. Today, we want to highlight the results and the experience at the Model UN organized by Gimnasio Especializado del Norte:
On the day of the event, we were warmly welcomed. The punctuality of our team allowed us to sit in the front row and enjoy the opening ceremonies, including a beautiful performance of a traditional Colombian dance. After the opening speeches, our seeds, ready for debate, joined their respective committees.
Despite initial nerves, Renfort’s seeds and grower (teacher) stood out for their debates, filled with creative and well-supported ideas. Their performance reflected not only their prior academic preparation but also their growth in confidence, eloquence, and argumentation.
By the end of the day, our team achieved the following recognitions:
- Best Oratory: Luciana Saavedra
- Best Opening Speech: María José Aldana
- Best Argumentation: Venus Ojeda
- Outstanding Delegate: Miguel Guevara
- Best Nobel Peace Mediator: Miranda Estrada
- Outstanding Delegate: Grower Daniela Hofbauer
Our seeds’ and grower’s participation was so remarkable that one of the organizers reached out to personally thank us for our commitment and excellent representation. Without a doubt, we look forward to continuing to participate in events like this, which not only enrich us academically but also foster the personal development of our students.
Model United Nations Extracurricular
To prepare our seeds for such environments, Renfort offers Time Off Modelo de la ONU, an extracurricular class focused on developing key skills such as debate, parliamentary language, and global research. In these sessions, we not only strengthen eloquence and argumentation but also work on building confidence and leadership, fundamental pillars of our inclusive and disruptive education.
